SÅ FUNKAR VALET
• USA har ett indirekt valsystem till valet av president. Kandidaterna lanserar sina kandidaturer året före valet och antalet kandidater decimeras därefter i primärval som inleds i början av valåret.

• Vid primärvalen röstar invånarna i varje delstat på vilken republikansk respektive demokratisk kandidat de vill se som president. Här är tidtabellen för primärvalen.

• Vid de båda partiernas konvent under sommaren nominerar varje parti en kandidat var som går vidare till presidentvalet i början av november.

• I valet krävs 270 elektorsröster för att vinna. De flesta delstater, men inte alla, ger alla sina elektorsröster åt en vinnande kandidat. Mer här.

DATUMEN
• 1 februari: Iowa håller sitt så kallade "caucus" (politiskt möte för att välja kandidat). 
• Ca en vecka senare i februari: New Hampshire och South Carolina håller sina primärval.
• 23 februari: Nevada håller sitt primärval.
• 1 mars: "Supertisdagen" då minst elva delstater håller primärval. Här, om inte förr, väntas flera kandidater falla bort.
Primärvalssäsongen pågår till mitten av juni.
• 18–21 juli: Republikanernas partikonvent hålls vid Quicken Loans Arena i Cleveland, Ohio.
• 25–28 juli: Demokraternas partikonvent hålls vid Wells Fargo Center i Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
• 8 november 2016: presidentval.
• 20 januari 2017: den nya presidenten svärs in i Washington DC, "the Inaguration Day".
